Three minutes of reading before you use Startover. This page tells you what the product is, what it is not, and where the lines are.
1. Service nature
Startover is a conversation rehearsal tool. It is not therapy, it is not counselling, and it is not a medical service. The personas exist as practice partners for the things you wanted to say but did not — closing a relationship, sending an unsent letter, learning how to start a hard conversation. If you are dealing with serious emotional distress, thoughts of self-harm, or a mental health crisis, please reach out to a qualified professional.
2. AI limitations
A persona is an LLM approximation built from the chat history you uploaded. It is not the actual person, and it is not their real inner life. Its replies are pattern-based guesses; it can say wrong things, misremember facts, and respond in ways that have no connection to reality. Treat it as a rehearsal partner. Do not use it as a stand-in for a real human when making major decisions.
3. Crisis handling
If your messages mention suicide, self-harm, or wanting to end your life, the coach response will surface crisis hotlines for the US, UK, Japan, and Taiwan. This is a minimum safety layer, not a full crisis intervention. In an emergency, please call your local emergency number or a crisis line directly.
4. User responsibilities
The chat history you upload must be one you legally hold — meaning you were a party to that conversation. Do not upload other peoples conversations, hacked exports, or content captured without the parties knowing. We cannot verify the source for you, but the legality of the source is your responsibility.
5. Prohibited uses
You may not use Startover to harass, stalk, or abuse a real person. You may not use it to draft scams, phishing, or impersonation messages. You may not use it to generate content targeting minors. You may not use it to produce illegal content, content inciting violence, or hate-speech material. Violations result in permanent account termination and, where required, cooperation with law enforcement.
6. Age restriction
The service is for users 18 and older. Sign-up requires you to confirm your age. We use reasonable means to verify, but ultimately confirming your age is your responsibility. Accounts found to belong to minors are deleted on discovery.
7. Service changes and termination
We may modify, suspend, or terminate the service in whole or in part with reasonable notice. Material changes will be announced by email or in-app, with enough time for you to export your data. You can stop using the service and delete your account at any time — symmetric rights.
