A private alternative to Character.AI
Character.AI is a public roleplay catalog. Replika is a long-term AI companion. Startover is the third thing — a private, one-time rehearsal tool that distills personas out of your own real chat history, with no shared character library and no parasocial maintenance loop.
When you'd want this instead
When you want a specific person, not a public character. When you want privacy — personas live only in your account, source chat is deleted after 30 days, nothing is used to train any model. When the point is closure or rehearsal, not a long-term companion relationship.
What Startover does differently
Six-dimension persona distillation from your real messages: personality, language, emotions, values, interests, dynamic. Sandbox scenarios for closure, apology, goodbye, asking one question. A reflection card after each rehearsal. No public catalog, no shared characters, no infinite-chat loop — the design assumes you come once, talk for ten minutes, and close the tab clearer than when you opened it.

Common questions
Is Startover free like Character.AI?
Free during beta. Unlike Character.AI there's no public catalog — every persona is private to your account. Personas live until you delete them. Source chat is deleted after 30 days.
Can I share my persona publicly the way Character.AI lets you?
No. Startover is designed for one-to-one rehearsal, not public roleplay. Personas live only in your account. If you want a public character library, Character.AI is the right tool — Startover's opposite design choice is intentional.
Does it support fictional characters?
Yes. Pick "other" as the relationship. With enough source material (book passages, transcript dumps, ample fanfic), the distill works on fictional characters — but the experience is closer to "one specific reading of that character" than "the canonical character", which is also intentional.
How is this different from Replika?
Replika is built for daily companionship. Startover is built for one or two rehearsal sessions and then walking away. Most users open Startover a handful of times total, not daily.
